Argentine legend Ángel Di María has ruled out the possibility of returning to the Argentina national team, stressing that his decision to retire from international football is final.
In an interview given a few days before the 2026 World Cup, the former Argentina winger admitted that at first it was difficult for him to no longer be part of the squad, but he now feels at peace with his decision.
“No. It’s over now, that’s the decision I’ve made,” Di María said when asked about a possible return to the national team.
However, the 38-year-old did not rule out the possibility of traveling to the United States to support Argentina during the World Cup if his schedule with Rosario Central allows it.
Speaking about Lionel Scaloni’s team, Di María expressed confidence that the new generation will bring fresh energy to the squad, but emphasized that only one player has an unquestionable status.
“The only untouchable player is Messi. Everyone else has to fight for their place.”
According to him, the strong competition within the squad is one of the main reasons why Argentina continues to remain among the elite of world football.
Meanwhile, captain Lionel Messi is expected to be the leading figure of La Albiceleste at the 2026 World Cup as well, despite his age.
