Liverpool have entered a new era following the club’s decision to dismiss Arne Slot, just one year after the Dutch manager guided the team to their 20th English league title.
Although the most recent season ended with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and qualification for the UEFA Champions League, the club’s hierarchy decided to make changes to the coaching staff, bringing Slot’s tenure at Anfield to an end.
Immediately after his departure, Andoni Iraola emerged as the leading candidate to take over the Reds’ managerial position.
The Spanish tactician had already decided to leave Bournemouth at the end of his contract, and reports suggest that he has now reached an agreement in principle with the Merseyside club.
According to English media reports, Iraola has identified five key targets he wants to bring to Anfield in order to rebuild the squad and restore Liverpool’s challenge for major trophies.
Liverpool face a busy summer, with Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konaté expected to leave as free agents, creating significant gaps in key areas of the team.
At the top of Iraola’s wishlist are RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain youngster Bradley Barcola, both considered ideal fits for the style of play he wants to implement.
Another player being closely monitored is West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen.
In addition to strengthening the attack, Liverpool are also looking to add quality in midfield. One of their main targets is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, who has attracted attention with his impressive performances throughout the season.
Defensively, the Reds continue to keep a close eye on Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries, who is viewed as a potential replacement for any departures at the back.
Liverpool also have internal options for central defense. Young talents Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are considered promising candidates to fill any gaps that may arise within the squad.
Another possibility under consideration is the return of former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool included a buy-back clause worth around £70 million in the deal that took the defender to Germany, leaving the door open for a potential return in the future.
With major changes on the horizon and Iraola seemingly close to taking charge, Liverpool appear ready to begin a new rebuilding process, aiming to return to the summit of English and European football. ⚽
