British actor Michael Pennington, best known for his role in the iconic Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 82.

In the famous Star Wars saga created by George Lucas, Pennington portrayed Moff Jerjerrod, the military officer responsible for overseeing the construction of the Second Death Star.

Beyond his role in science-fiction cinema, Pennington was widely regarded as one of the most distinguished performers of William Shakespeare’s works. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company immediately after graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1964. One of the highlights of his theatrical career came in 1980 with his performance as Hamlet, a role that earned him widespread critical acclaim. Renowned theatre director John Barton once described Pennington as “an extraordinary actor.”

The actor also enjoyed an important career in television and film. In 2011, he portrayed former Labour leader Michael Foot in the biographical film The Iron Lady, starring alongside Meryl Streep. Other notable roles included playing Laertes in Hamlet directed by Tony Richardson, as well as appearances in television productions such as The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

In addition to acting, Pennington was also an author. He published books about Shakespeare’s works, as well as travel writings, including Rossya: A Journey Through Siberia.

News of his passing has prompted many tributes across the arts world, where he is remembered as an artist who made a significant contribution to theatre, television, and cinema.
