Putin’s revenge for the drone strike in Ukraine has not yet fully unfolded, U.S. officials told Reuters.
American authorities believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to retaliate against Ukraine for its drone attack last weekend has not yet fully materialized, suggesting a significant and multifaceted assault is still to come.
The news was reported by Reuters, citing U.S. officials.
The timing of Russia’s full response remains unclear, with one source stating it is expected within days.
A second U.S. official said the retaliation will likely involve various types of aerial capabilities, including missiles and drones.
The officials spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity and did not provide details on Russia’s expected targets or intelligence specifics.
The first official said Moscow’s attack would be “asymmetric,” meaning its approach and targets would not mirror Ukraine’s weekend strike on Russian fighter jets.
Russia launched an intense missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday, and the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the strikes on military and military-linked targets were in response to what it called Ukrainian “terrorist acts” against Russia.
However, U.S. officials believe the full Russian response has yet to come.
A Western diplomatic source emphasized that the attack is likely to escalate with strikes against symbolic Ukrainian targets such as government buildings, in an effort to send a clear message to Kyiv.
