Emmanuel Macron calls for the resumption of United States–Iran talks to avoid escalation

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran, after the first round of talks ended without an agreement.

He said he has held discussions with Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasizing the need to “clarify misunderstandings and avoid escalation.”

Macron called for a ceasefire to be fully respected by all parties and to also include Lebanon, although the United States considers this issue separate from negotiations with Iran, reports CNN.

He also stressed the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz unconditionally, in order to enable a swift resumption of dialogue.

According to him, France and the United Kingdom will organize a videoconference with other countries to discuss a defensive mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in this strategic area.
