Neuer Ends His World Cup Career on a Bitter Note

Manuel Neuer has brought his international career to an end with a record he would rather forget, equaling the unwanted record for the most consecutive FIFA World Cup matches without keeping a clean sheet.

The legendary Germany goalkeeper ended his international journey following his nation’s shock elimination by Paraguay in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

An Unwanted Record

Julio Enciso’s goal in the 42nd minute meant Neuer conceded in his 10th consecutive World Cup match, setting an unwanted milestone.

Behind him on the list are Thomas Ravelli of Sweden with nine consecutive matches and Jorge Campos of Mexico with eight.

Germany’s Defensive Struggles

Since defeating Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final, Germany have conceded in every single World Cup match they have played.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Neuer was beaten by Mexico, Sweden, and South Korea, as Germany suffered a shocking group-stage elimination.

The same story repeated itself at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Germany conceded against Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica, leading to another early exit.

With this statistic, Neuer equaled the negative record of Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal, who also conceded in 10 consecutive World Cup matches between 1950 and 1962.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although Germany progressed beyond the group stage, they still conceded against Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Paraguay, once again highlighting the team’s long-standing defensive problems.

The End of an Era

Neuer’s inclusion in Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad sparked considerable debate, as the 40-year-old had come out of international retirement following a decision by Julian Nagelsmann.

With 124 international appearances, Neuer remains one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of German football. However, he brings his international career to a close with the bitter disappointment of an early World Cup exit and an unwanted record.

Meanwhile, Germany are expected to begin a rebuilding process ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with talents such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Lennart Karl expected to become the pillars of the next generation, while strengthening the defense remains one of the country’s biggest priorities.
