Peles Castle, Romania

Peles Castle or Castelul Peles is a beautiful castle in the town of Sinaia in Central Romania. It is one of two castles in Sinaia that you can visit or just see from the outside.

Peles Castle Viewpoint

There is a viewpoint marked on Google Maps near to the street market. This is a fantastic place to take a photograph of the castle or a selfie too. Here the castle is framed with a beautiful wildflower meadow, the mountains and some pretty forest. I imagine this is absolutely stunning when snow covered in the winter months.

History of Peles Castle in Romania

They built Peleș Castle built between 1873 and 1914, then they held its inauguration in 1883. The castle was built for King Carol I, the first king of Romania. After visiting the beautiful location in the Carpathian mountains, King Carol I fell in love with the area. After purchasing the land, the designs were decided, the original plans were not original enough for King Carol I. However German architect Johannes Schultz came up with a more original design at the king liked.

This then resulted in the construction of Peles Castle, a grand palatial alpine castle combining unique features of classic European styles. The design included both Italian elegance and German aesthetics along Renaissance lines. An addition to the complex was the neighbouring Pelișor Castle, they completed this in between 1889 and 1903. This was to be the home of his heir, the future King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie of Romania.

Peles castle is beautiful from the outside and from every angle. It is lovely to see the building from different angles while exploring the castle’s grounds.

Although it is called a castle, by design and function, it is actually a palace. They designed the building as a blend of Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival styles of Architectural. Some consider it similar to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany in terms of influences. The castle also has a Saxon influence in the interior courtyard facades.
