Messi Dreams of Owning a Club After Retirement, Also Talks About His Dreams and Personal Life

The Argentine star, Lionel Messi, stated that he would like to own a club once he retires from football, in an interview published this Tuesday by a broadcasting channel in his home country, in which he also spoke about his family life, his personality, and even his taste in drinks.

In an interview with Luzu TV, he also talked about his family life, his introspective personality, his habit of dealing with mistakes internally, and his personal preferences, including his love for wine.

He also recalled his temporary retirement from the Argentine national team after losing three consecutive finals and emphasized the importance of never giving up in the face of difficulties.

“Honestly, I don’t see myself as a coach. I like the idea of being a manager, but if I had to choose one of the three, I would prefer to be an owner,” Messi initially said in an interview with Luzu TV recorded at the end of December.

“I would like to have my own club… one that starts from the bottom and is able to give children and people the opportunity to grow and to build an important club,” added the 38-year-old Messi, smiling more than in most of his media appearances.

Messi spoke about his dreams and his personal life.

In May 2025, Messi, who has not yet decided whether he will take part in the 2026 World Cup, took his first steps in that direction by joining Deportivo LSM as a partner, a project of his close friend Luis Suárez, which competes in the lower divisions of Uruguayan football.

During the interview, the 2022 World Cup champion with the Argentine national team also shared details about his relationship with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and assured that he is romantic, even if not very demonstrative.

“I have my side of being a bit strange more than anything else. I really like being alone,” he said, admitting that he is “very structured.”

“I tend to bottle things up, to keep everything inside and swallow my problems; I’ve changed a lot, but I’m still like that,” added the Inter Miami captain, who admitted that he went to therapy because of his personality when he was playing for Barcelona.

He also spoke about himself when things don’t go well. “I’ve had many bad matches where I was a disaster, or I missed one-on-one situations, goals, and I said all kinds of things to myself. I’ve cursed myself quite a lot.”

Messi also referred to the moment when he stepped away from the Albiceleste national team after losing three consecutive finals between 2014 and 2016.

“I felt really bad because I watched the national team’s matches and wanted to die. Thank God I was able to come back.”

“The best example is never giving up, to keep trying. No matter what. If you fall, get up and try again. And if it doesn’t work, know that you did everything possible to achieve your dream,” the Argentine emphasized.

During the conversation, the number 10 also spoke about his reluctance to dance, which he does only when he is “drunk,” and said that his favorite alcoholic drink is wine, which he sometimes mixes with Sprite “to make it work faster.”
