Many ordinary people paid their final respects to the Holy Father alongside heads of state from around the world.
More than 400,000 people attended Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome, gathering in St. Peter’s Square and along the route that carried his coffin by car to Santa Maria Maggiore.
Many ordinary citizens honored the Holy Father alongside world leaders such as Trump, Zelensky, Starmer, and Macron. A total of 160 delegations were present at the funeral.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, one of the highest-ranking figures in the Catholic Church, led the simplified ceremony, which included a series of religious hymns, an emotional homily, and a final farewell to the Pope, who was the first Latin American Pope.
Francis’ modest coffin was then transported by a white car across the Tiber River to be buried in Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore — a beautifully lit basilica located atop the highest point in the Italian capital.
