Poland Requests French Nuclear Weapons on Its Territory

“The French nuclear arsenal could indeed help in defending Poland,” said Polish President Andrzej Duda in a statement.

As reported by Politico, Duda — who has previously called for Poland to host some U.S. nuclear weapons on its soil to deter Russian aggression — stated that French warheads could also strengthen Poland’s defense.

“I believe we could accept both options,” the president said.

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed extending the so-called French nuclear umbrella to European allies amid fears that Russia may one day target another European state.

With around 300 nuclear warheads, France is the only EU member that possesses such weapons, and one of three NATO members — along with the U.S. and the U.K. — to have nuclear capabilities.

Poland and Denmark have previously expressed openness to being under French nuclear protection.

In March, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland was “seriously discussing” the possibility with France, especially following warnings from the U.S. that a Donald Trump-led White House may not guarantee Europe’s security in the future.
