At Least 51 Dead from Floods in Spain

At least 51 people have died due to flooding from torrential rains on Tuesday in Spain’s eastern region of Valencia, authorities reported on Wednesday.

The heavy rains on Tuesday caused roads and cities to flood. Images posted on social media showed people stranded due to the flooding, with some climbing trees for safety.

Carlos Mazon, the regional chief of Valencia, told the press that some people remain trapped in inaccessible areas.

“If [emergency services] haven’t arrived, it’s not due to a lack of resources but because of access,” Mazon said, adding that reaching some areas is “completely impossible.”

Emergency services in the region urged citizens to avoid traveling on the roads and to stay updated through official sources.

Train services between Madrid and Barcelona have been canceled due to the flooding, while schools and other essential services have been suspended in the hardest-hit areas.

The Spanish Meteorological Institute, AEMET, has issued a red alert for Valencia.

This appears to be the highest death toll from flooding in Europe since 2021, when nearly 200 people died, mainly in Germany.

Scientists say that natural disasters in the region are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
