Argentina beat Brazil 0-1 at the Maracana in a World Cup qualifier, but the match was unfortunately overshadowed by incidents in the stands.
The start of the match was delayed by half an hour due to a violent clash between Brazilian police and Argentina fans.
Police entered the stands and beat the away fans with batons, so Gaucho captain Lionel Messi pulled his team into the dressing room until the situation calmed down.
After the match, the famous Argentinian was clearly upset about everything that was happening.
“This was difficult for us. We saw people being beaten with sticks. There were also families of the players in the stands. We retreated to the dressing room because we wanted to defuse the situation. There wasn’t much we could do. We watched them hit people, push them. A tragedy could have happened. The players were asking how their families were, how the people were doing in the stands,” said Messi after the match.
After everything he saw, the Argentina captain was in no mood for football.
“You are more focused on people than on the game. It fell into the background and was less important at that moment,” concluded Messi.
