A dose of Narcan, a medication used in emergencies to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was reportedly found at the scene where American actress Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina.
According to reports, the medication was found on a mattress in the apartment where she was staying.
However, it is still unknown whether the Narcan had been administered to Panettiere herself or to someone else who may have been in the apartment. Authorities have not confirmed that an overdose was the cause of her death.
In emergency-service communications, responders initially received a report concerning an unidentified woman who was experiencing cardiac arrest.
Several minutes later, a possible overdose was mentioned as the reason for the emergency response. Emergency crews attempted to revive her using advanced life-support measures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but their efforts were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Panettiere, best known for her roles in the television series Nashville and Heroes, had previously spoken openly about her struggles with opioid and alcohol addiction. In a 2022 interview with People, she discussed how severe her addiction had become and how difficult it had been for her to function at certain points in her life without alcohol or opioids.
The actress had also revealed that her exposure to prescription medications and substance use had begun at an early age.
Despite the reports about Narcan and the mention of a possible overdose in emergency communications, the official cause and manner of Hayden Panettiere’s death have not yet been determined. An autopsy reportedly found no signs of trauma, and authorities have said there is no indication of foul play. Further testing is still pending.
Therefore, at this stage, it cannot be stated with certainty that Panettiere died as a result of an overdose. The investigation remains ongoing.
