Lionel Messi versus Mohamed Salah.
Two of the biggest names in world football, two national icons, and two very different World Cup journeys.
Argentina will face Egypt on Tuesday in Atlanta at 5:00 p.m. local time in a clash that will determine a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
But this match is also a showdown between two of the greatest players of their generation: Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah.
Messi, 39, and Salah, 34, are both in the final stages of their extraordinary careers.
The Argentine captain has hinted that this could be his last World Cup, while Salah still hopes to be part of the 2030 tournament.
Their World Cup stories could not be more different.
Messi has already lifted football’s most prestigious trophy.
He is the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, the player with the most appearances in the tournament, and one of the top scorers at the 2026 World Cup, according to BBC Sport journalist Andy Cryer.
For Salah, the road has been far more challenging. In his third World Cup appearance with Egypt, he has finally reached the knockout stage. The Egyptian national team has advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in its history.
During Salah’s career, Egypt lost two Africa Cup of Nations finals, in 2017 and 2021. The star forward has also had several public disputes with the Egyptian Football Association over issues including image rights, travel arrangements, and team management.
However, his Panenka penalty in the shootout victory over Australia gave Egypt a historic moment. Now, Salah hopes that the clash against Argentina and Messi will become the greatest chapter of his World Cup career.
It is a battle between a world champion and a captain chasing the greatest glory of his career.
Messi and Salah will go head-to-head for a place in football history.
