Argentina shows champion spirit, comes back from the dead against Egypt

Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of this FIFA World Cup, overturning a 2-0 deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the closing minutes of an extraordinary Round of 16 clash, securing their place in the quarter-finals.

The reigning world champions started the match on the front foot but were stunned early by Egypt. In the 15th minute, Yasser Ibrahim headed home from a Marwan Attia cross to give the African side the lead.

Argentina had the perfect opportunity to equalize in the 21st minute after being awarded a penalty following a challenge by Haissem Hassan. However, Lionel Messi failed to convert from the spot as goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly and made an outstanding save.

Lionel Scaloni’s side continued to push for the equalizer, but Shobeir was in inspired form.

He denied Julián Álvarez before producing another excellent save to stop Alexis Mac Allister, while Messi also struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort.

Egypt began the second half with great confidence and doubled their lead in the 58th minute. A swift counterattack ended with Mostafa Ziko finding the back of the net to make it 2-0.

That goal completely changed the course of the match. Lionel Scaloni introduced Lautaro Martínez, and the substitutions immediately injected fresh energy into Argentina’s attack.

In the 79th minute, Lionel Messi delivered a superb ball into the box for Cristian Romero, who rose above the Egyptian defenders and headed home to make it 2-1.

Argentina refused to give up. Just four minutes later, Messi stepped up once again with a spectacular goal.

After an assist from Gonzalo Montiel, the Argentine captain unleashed a brilliant volley from inside the penalty area. The ball struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing into the net to level the score at 2-2.

With the match heading toward its conclusion, Argentina completed an unforgettable comeback.

In the second minute of stoppage time (90+2), Lautaro Martínez whipped a dangerous cross into the box, and Enzo Fernández timed his run perfectly before finishing from close range to make it 3-2.

From trailing 2-0 to winning 3-2, Argentina once again displayed the character, mentality, and fighting spirit of a true world champion.

Although Messi missed a penalty, he responded with a magnificent assist and a stunning goal, while Cristian Romero and Enzo Fernández sealed a comeback that will be remembered for years to come.
