FC Barcelona are planning to sign a new striker this summer as they look for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The veteran number nine is not expected to renew his contract before it expires in June, and work has already begun on drawing up a list of potential targets.
Throughout the season, Barcelona have been linked with Harry Kane, who would be available for €65 million. The Bayern Munich and England national team star is one of the best strikers in the world and could follow Lewandowski’s path by swapping Bavaria for Catalonia in his thirties.
Barcelona presidential pre-candidate Xavier Vilajoana plans to sign Kane if he is elected in next month’s vote, and the player himself has now responded to the speculation. According to Diario AS, the 32-year-old admitted that he knows little about the situation with the La Liga leaders, while stressing that he is very happy at Bayern.
“I haven’t heard anything. Of course, my father and my brother deal with these matters, so I don’t know if they have heard something. But they haven’t told me anything. I like being here on the pitch and I’m very happy at Bayern. My focus is on this season and here at Bayern.”
Whether a transfer could happen is a separate issue, but if Barcelona have any chance of bringing Kane in, they should certainly take it. There is currently a shortage of top-level young strikers on the market, so the Catalan club could benefit from repeating the “Lewandowski trick” from four years ago.
It remains to be seen whether Kane would be open to joining Barcelona, but even if he were, the move would depend on whether the club president — whoever that may be — gives the green light to pursue the deal.
