Luka Modrić has shared a balanced view on the long-standing Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate, refusing to take sides while praising both legends for defining an era in football.
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the former Real Madrid midfielder admitted to having a closer bond with Ronaldo due to the time they spent together, but also expressed admiration for Messi.
“It’s a question I don’t like. They defined an era,” Modrić initially said.
“I feel more connected to Cristiano because I played with him; he was my teammate in Madrid, and I can assure you that he is not only an outstanding footballer, but also an extraordinary person.”
“People don’t know it, but he has a big heart, always ready to help others. And he is a simple, down-to-earth person.”
Speaking about Messi, Modrić added: “As a person, I don’t know him, but I have no doubt that he is also extraordinary. As a player, magnificent.”
