Poem by Özdemir Asaf:

One evening you were gazing from the window
At the darkness falling heavy on the streets
In front of your house someone passed by—someone who looked like me
Your heart began to beat fast.

The one who passed was not me.
One night you were sleeping in your bed
You rose suddenly into an uneasy world
What opened your eyes was a fragment of a dream.

And amid the darkness, your room—
The one who saw you was not me.
I was far away at that time
Your eyes grew close to tears, to tears without reason.

Since the moment you began to think of me
You let yourself live inside love
The one who knew this was not me.
You were absently reading a book

The people within it loved or died
In the novel, a young man was killed
You trembled, began to weep with sobs
The one who died was not me…
