Poem by Ivan Turgeniev

You Finally Told Me I Must Leave

You finally told me I must go,
The world condemned us — there’s no hope for two.
You said you’re sad; I should now try to show
The strength to forget — beneath the young moon’s hue.
Over the sleepy garden mist lay wide,
I listened to your voice, but couldn’t see
Why under spring’s warm breath, by your clear eyes’ side,
My tears were falling silently.

Yes, I understood; you’re free — now flee.
I’ll follow, yes — I’ll go. But how to part,
To go like this, in silence, numb to be,
When pain is tearing through my heart?
I can’t say now I love you like before,
What’s gone won’t ever be again —
But love, I’ve never shut that door,
Without love, I can’t remain.

Is truly all that once was pure now dead?
As if no bond had ever tied us two,
As if our hearts had never gently bled —
And now, so easily, it’s all untrue?
I loved you deeply — but you didn’t care —
No! No! Don’t say you did — don’t lie.
You gave me smiles and words laid bare,
While I gave you my soul to die.

So here I am today — yet still I swear
I won’t go on without a love to live.
Once more I’ll love — in madness, unaware,
With thirst no other soul could give.
And maybe — yes, this world of magic dreams,
With wonders, laughter, love’s sweet flame,
And newborn soul and pain in streams —
May never come again the same.

I’ll go — but wait — just once more touch my hand,
And let this love be laid to rest.
This is the moment — goodbye’s bitter stand,
Then sleep again, cold like the rest…
O Lord above! Please give me strength to see
That life has not betrayed its song,
That I am still young — that love can still be
And in my soul, still strong.
