Poem by: Abdel latif Moubarak…. Egyptian poet

first of the insane

Your presence within my ribs…
And I cried out to the universe,
Carving the last of journeys
For the overflow of patience with you.
I am your dream,
Stretched out along the path,
Blessing the step of the needy,
And mourning my life to time.
I am the imprisoned,
and within me,
Between my ribs,
I am imprisoned for you.
My conscience, make space for me,
The limits of the call to what’s coming.
You exchange thirst and hunger with me,
And my shouts are adorned.
In the heart of a protest, we settle accounts,
And we reproach each other…
You betray me,
And run to the first of the traitors.
Your presence within my ribs…
And I cried out to the universe—
That wasn’t the beginning,
Other than my being in you,
The first of the insane.
