Poem by Emily Dickinson

I Felt a Funeral in My Brain

I felt a funeral, in my brain,
With mourners pacing, to and fro —
They moved until it seemed that
The feeling soon would overflow.

And when they all had taken seats,
In honor, a drum began to pound —
It thumped and thudded time and again,
Until my mind was numb all around.

Then I felt a box begin to rise,
And slowly my soul split apart,
Again I heard those leaden boots,
And space was ringing in my heart.

And all the Heavens turned to bells,
And Being became just an Ear —
And I kept still, a different race,
A withered, lonely figure near.

And then a plank in Reason broke,
And down I fell, fell deep and far —
With every thud I touched a World,
And only at the bottom — knew where we are.
