Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-0 and 5-2 in the last two El Clasico matches in the league and the Spanish Super Cup.
They are set to play again in the 35th round of La Liga on May 11 in Barcelona—unless they meet earlier in the Copa del Rey or the Champions League.
The May El Clasico could also decide the league title.
Fans in Spain will certainly not be pleased with the information released by the portal Ser Catalunya, stating that Barcelona is considering moving this match abroad if the Camp Nou renovations are not completed by that date. It wouldn’t be the first official El Clasico played outside Spain.
For years, the Spanish Super Cup has been held in Saudi Arabia, which secured a ten-year hosting deal from the Spanish Football Federation for a significant sum of money.
This decision angered many fans in Spain, and now there is a possibility that a league El Clasico could also be “relocated” from the country.
Barcelona has secured €1.5 billion for the renovation of its Camp Nou stadium. The seating capacity of Europe’s largest stadium will increase from 99,300 to 105,000. In addition to the stadium, other club facilities are also being renovated.
Among them is Palau Blaugrana, home to the club’s basketball and handball teams, as well as the Johan Cruyff Stadium, where the reserve and women’s teams play, which is also undergoing renovations.
