Lionel Messi has won the Player of the Year award for 2023. This was one of the announcements on Monday during the “FIFA THE BEST” awards ceremony in London.
The Inter Miami footballer was not present at the ceremony.
Messi was honored for the trophies won with Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.
He won over competition from Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
The thirty-six-year-old received forty-eight points, the same as Haaland, but Messi ranked first due to a regulation that gives priority to the number of nominations chosen as the first by the National Team captains. Mbappe finished third with thirty-five points.
Messi had previously won the same award in 2019 and 2022.
Additionally, Messi is an eight-time winner of the “Golden Ball.”
