One of Albania’s most famous legends tells the story of Rozafa, a young woman whose love and sacrifice gave life to the mighty According to the legend, three brothers were building the castle, but every night the walls mysteriously collapsed. An old wise man told them that the fortress would only stand if one of their wives was sacrificed and built into its walls.
The brothers promised not to warn their wives. However, two of them secretly broke their promise. Only the youngest brother remained faithful, and the next day his wife, Rozafa, came to the castle carrying food for her husband.
Accepting her fate for the good of her family and future generations, Rozafa agreed to the sacrifice, but she made one final request:
Leave one eye uncovered so she could watch her son grow.
Leave one hand free so she could caress him.
Leave one foot free so she could rock his cradle.
Leave one breast uncovered so she could continue to feed her baby.
Her wish was granted, and from that moment the castle walls stood firm forever. Legend says that a white liquid still flows from the stones, symbolizing Rozafa’s mother’s milk and her eternal love. 🤍
Today, Rozafa Castle is one of Albania’s most iconic landmarks, overlooking the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers. It stands not only as a medieval fortress but also as a timeless symbol of love, sacrifice, loyalty, and strength.
