“Others are ahead of us as favorites” — Lionel Messi names the teams that frighten Argentina

Argentina icon Lionel Messi has singled out France, Spain, Brazil, and Portugal as the main contenders to win the 2026 World Cup, insisting that “La Albiceleste” are not the absolute favorites despite entering the tournament as defending champions.

Messi made these comments in an interview with Pollo Alvarez, where he spoke about the upcoming tournament in North America and assessed the current balance of international football.

“We have to understand that there are other favorites ahead of us, teams that are coming in with better form.”

“France looks very strong again, with so many top-level players. Spain as well.”

Messi also mentioned Brazil as a permanent contender, despite not always delivering consistent performances on the international stage.

“Brazil, even though they haven’t been at their best for some time, are always contenders.”

He also pointed to Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, as a serious rival for the 2026 World Cup.

“Portugal, I think, also has a very competitive national team,” Messi emphasized.

Argentina will enter the tournament as reigning world champions, but Messi’s participation remains uncertain, as the forward has not yet confirmed whether he will take part in the competition.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, while Argentina is expected to begin its campaign against Algeria in a Group J match on June 17.
