Happiness is not having what you want. It’s appreciating what you have

written by Ruzhdi Gashi, writer and positive thinking coach

In the pursuit of happiness, we often chase big dreams, desires that seem unreachable, and wealth we believe will fulfill us. But the truth is that happiness doesn’t lie in achieving every desire—it lies in the ability to appreciate what we already have. When we realize this, we begin to see life through different eyes.

A person who constantly strives for more, without stopping to see what they’ve already achieved, lives in a perpetual state of lack. Even when they get what they once dreamed of, after a while they forget it and want something else. This endless cycle of wanting creates the illusion that happiness is always one step ahead—but never where we are.

On the other hand, the person who knows how to appreciate the moment, their health, the people around them, and the small blessings that surround them, is rich in spirit. They don’t need much to feel good—because they know how to be grateful. Gratitude is the foundation of lasting happiness. It teaches us to pause, reflect, and realize that perhaps we already have more than we thought.

To desire is human, but to be thankful is wisdom. Happiness is not a destination—it’s a way of living. It’s a feeling that arises when the heart is at peace with reality, not when the mind chases what is missing.

If today we wake up with health, someone who loves us, a piece of bread on the table, and a reason to smile—we are more blessed than millions of others. Happiness is not about the perfection of life, but about the attention we give to the beauty it already holds, just as it is.
