Barcelona are operating with minimal resources in defense, with Andreas Christensen sidelined for a long period. Hansi Flick has only six options available and has recently been using Eric García in midfield.
Another question mark is when Ronald Araújo will be ready to play, after returning from his period of absence.
Flick confirmed on Friday that Barcelona are looking for a defender in the January transfer market and expressed confidence that they will be able to complete such a move.
Evidence of the lack of depth in the squad can be seen in the fact that García has also played in defense, while Gerard Martín, originally the backup left-back, has become a starter as a center-back.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Catalan derby against Espanyol, Flick confirmed reports that Araújo is in good shape and training well after four weeks away from the pitch.
The Uruguayan defender is “not fully fit physically,” according to Flick, and the coach left the decision regarding the timing of his return to Araújo himself.
However, it appears that he will not even be on the bench.
Marca reports that after a meeting between the coaching staff and the medical team on Friday, a decision was made to delay his return to match action a little longer.
The plan is for Araújo to potentially be available for selection in the Spanish Super Cup next Wednesday, but no final decision has yet been made.
Recently, Martín and Pau Cubarsí have been Flick’s preferred pairing at the heart of the defense.
With Araújo out, Eric García and Jules Koundé are the only real alternatives, although Flick has spoken very positively about García’s impact in midfield.
There is no doubt that Barcelona will need either a new reinforcement or Araújo’s quick return; otherwise, they risk injuries to the defenders currently available.
