Messi will be appointed captain of Inter Miami

Lionel Messi is poised to be named captain of Inter Miami after just one game and less than 90 minutes for the club.
Speaking at a press conference, coach Tata Martino confirmed that Messi will be given the captain’s armband at the Major League Soccer club. He caught the team on his debut off the bench as he scored a superb last-minute free-kick to give Miami a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the League Cup.

Inter Miami’s current captain is Gregore, a defensive midfielder, but he is out with a long-term injury and Messi will take charge. It remains to be seen whether Gregore will restore the captaincy when he returns to the field.

Messi regularly wore the captain’s armband at Barcelona, although he never officially became captain at Paris Saint-Germain. He is the captain of Argentina and certainly lifted the World Cup in Qatar. He is arguably the highest profile player to play for Inter Miami, so making him captain is no surprise.

Inter Miami will face Atlanta United in the League Cup on Wednesday. Martino confirmed that both Messi and new signing Sergio Busquets will get more minutes in that match.
