Poem by Lulëzime Malaj

Abandoned castle
Once, I saw an abandoned castle,
I entered a saloon for Dukes and Counts,
In there I seemed a Princess in loneliness
Without any wigs without a crown!…

The contours of the piano like skeletons,
As if they aired baroque notes, by Bach…
Sounds that floated in air, like a ghost,
That held a beheaded right under its arm!

Somewhere, I found a small laced glove,
Which once would hold a warm hand inside,
Embracing everyone with much elegance,
Now it resembled the cold castle’s pride.

For many a year nobody has entered,
I recall it like the bereavement for a dead,
In mystery plunged like the “Sleeping Beauty”
That waits for the Prince to wake her from bed!
