Poem by Ismail Kadare

A girl!
He kissed you without loving
He did hurt your spirit badly
With bloody lips from your lipstick,
Just like a killer he turned an alley

Proud of “laying hands on you”
He told your name to all his friends
Having a beer, speaking of you
In the green parks during Weekends.

And you remained, all alone
With eyes fixed at nightingale nights.
A desolate square, where just happened
A car jam with catastrophic sights…

Now as you walk on Dibra street
They escort you with widened eyes
One just elbows a fellow guy
“Do you see her? She was his once…”

You hang your head, hasting your pace
To reach a girl a friend the sooner
And you repeat the standard words:
“Ah, every boy is just a ruiner.”

You both then sit before the radio
Light a cigar so silently
Upon her shoulder amid news words
You take a nap then instantly,

It will take you to another road
Broader and newer and much fair.
Among the people on factory grounds
At your nice legs no one will stare

There you will walk amid the crowds
Among the boys, perhaps you blend
One will elbow a fellow guy:
“Do you see her? Once we were friends…”
