The funeral ceremony is held for Christian Atsu, after his death from the earthquake in Turkey

Christian Atsu has been laid to rest in his native Ghana following his tragic death in the earthquake that struck Turkey in February.

Hundreds of people, including the president of Ghana and manager of the Ghanaian national football team, Chris Houghton, attended the funeral.

Atsu’s body was pulled from the rubble of the apartment two weeks after the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

Sports Minister there, Mustapha Ussif, said his legacy will remain an inspiration

“Even at the peak of his career, Astu remained himself and was never caught by pride, arrogance or indiscipline,” he said.

Atsu played in the Premier League during his career, with clubs including Chelsea, Newcastle United and Everton.

His career eventually took him to Turkey, with Atsu scoring a last-minute winner for Hatayspor against Kasimpasa, the day before the earthquake struck.

He made 65 appearances for Ghana and was part of the squad that reached the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, with Atsu named player of the tournament.
