Sacchi: I cried for Messi

Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi says Argentina-France was the best match of the World Cup and that he cried because of Leo Messi’s joy.
The South Americans won their third World Cup in an epic final won on penalties against France on Sunday.

First of all, a confession: when Messi raised the World Cup in the sky, my eyes were wet with tears”, wrote Sacchi in his column for “Gazzetta”.

“I thought about his path, what he had won with Barcelona, his dribbling, his Ballon d’Or awards. But it was that curse that he could not overcome. He had not won the most sought-after trophy with “Seleccion”.

“It actually looked like a course and that’s why I was so excited when he lifted the cup into the sky. Life is generous and so is football. It often gives you back what you worked for. Messi has given hope and emotions, he sweated and worked hard. This World Cup is the prize for a whole career,” said Sacchi.

“In my mind, there will be an image of sheer entertainment that kept billions of people glued to the television. This was a great victory for football”, concluded the former Italian coach.
