American Billionaire Jeff Bezos Buys Stake in Liverpool: After Years of Seeking Investors, the “Big Capital” Has Finally Arrived

The owners of English football club Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have reached a final agreement to sell approximately one-third of the club’s shares to the 1892 Holdings consortium. The consortium includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who also leads the group.

Under the agreement, the value of the Anfield giants has been estimated at between £5 billion and £6 billion, according to the BBC.

Under the newly agreed structure, FSG will continue to retain majority ownership and full operational control of the club.

Bhatia Takes Leadership Role, Bezos Without Management Position

As part of the agreement, businessman Amit Bhatia is expected to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and join the club’s expanded board of directors once all necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained.

For Jeff Bezos, the world’s fourth-richest person, whose wealth is estimated at around $256 billion, the deal marks his first entry into the ownership of a professional sports club. However, Bezos will not have a direct management role on the club’s board.

In an official statement released by the current owners, FSG emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership:

“This agreement supports Liverpool’s long-term ambitions for sustainable growth by bringing together leading experts from the worlds of global business, technology and strategic investment,” FSG said in its statement.

Fresh Capital for Liverpool During a Period of Transition

The American company FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 and, during its 16 years at the helm, has significantly increased the club’s financial and commercial value.

In recent years, FSG had openly been seeking external investors in order to inject fresh capital, while consistently insisting that it would retain overall control of the club.

This major financial move comes at a delicate time of transition for the English side:

Changes to the coaching staff: Following Liverpool’s Premier League triumph in 2025, manager Arne Slot was replaced by a new coaching staff.

Changes to the sporting structure: The club also parted ways with senior executive Michael Edwards, who was regarded as one of the key architects of the team that ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a league title in 2020.

Squad renewal: Liverpool’s leading goalscorer Mohamed Salah has also departed the team, opening a new chapter of rebuilding on the pitch.
