Cannavaro Recalls Zidane’s Headbutt on Materazzi: We Were Shocked

Fabio Cannavaro, captain and symbol of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning team, has recalled one of the most famous moments of that final—the headbutt by Zinedine Zidane on Marco Materazzi. In an interview with ESPN, marking the 20th anniversary of the 2006 FIFA World Cup triumph, he revealed some behind-the-scenes details from that historic night.

Cannavaro said that the Italian team was left surprised by Zidane’s reaction, which left France with one player fewer and brought an unexpected end to his career. “I liked Zidane, he was one of the biggest stars of our generation, but we have to admit he made a huge mistake,” he said.

According to him, regardless of what Materazzi may have said, the Frenchman’s reaction was not justified. “Marco told us what had happened, and many of us were shocked. We all wondered how such a reaction was possible over something so small,” Cannavaro added.

The former defender did not go into detail about the words exchanged but emphasized that even today, after so many years, it is important for players to stay calm and keep what happens on the pitch there.

He also spoke with appreciation about Materazzi, highlighting that despite his image as a tough defender, he had great human qualities and that he was proud to have shared success with him.

In the end, Cannavaro also commented on Italy’s current situation, saying that the team has lost some confidence but remains dangerous: “At the World Cup, everyone will once again be afraid of Italy.”
