Barcelona monitor Alvarez, but sporting director avoids comments

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has refused to provide details about a potential move for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez during the summer transfer window.

Álvarez, 26, has scored 42 goals and provided 14 assists in 94 appearances for Atlético since joining the club, but he has not found the net in La Liga since November and has recently been left on the bench. He has also been monitored by Arsenal and Chelsea, and previously played for Manchester City, where he recorded 36 goals and 19 assists in 103 matches.

Deco said:
“We haven’t spoken to any club or player. Even if we like someone, now is not the time. We are happy with the squad we have. There are many players we like.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona board member Joan Soler emphasized that the club could carry out signings such as Álvarez or Erling Haaland despite financial challenges:

“These transfers would pay for themselves within five years. Barcelona needs to be careful with its wage structure, but we are ready for these options.”

Barcelona continue to monitor Álvarez’s situation and will decide their transfer strategy based on the club’s objectives and the expected departure of Robert Lewandowski this summer.
