Real Madrid have secured the signing of another young midfield talent, with Manex Rezola arriving from UD Logroñés. The 19-year-old is expected to initially join Real Madrid C.
This news follows reports that Los Blancos are close to completing the transfer of Guille González from Cádiz. Last week, Liverpool talent Joshua Abe also met with several of the club’s stars after Real Madrid hosted the 17-year-old, clearly highlighting the club’s efforts to strengthen its academy.
Rezola will join Real Madrid in January, in a deal that, according to The Athletic, will be worth around €150,000 in total, with additional bonuses representing a significant sum for a fourth-division club such as Logroñés.
Rezola is described as a highly talented, technically gifted attacking midfielder, accustomed to playing as a number 10. For much of this season in the Segunda Federación, he has also been deployed on the wings, scoring two goals in 15 appearances, 14 of them as a starter.
Of Basque origin, Athletic Club were also very interested in Rezola. Real Madrid managed to beat competition from Los Leones and several other offers, including one from Saudi Arabia, to secure his signature. The plan is for Rezola to initially play for Real Madrid C, the club’s third team, with the possibility of promotion to Real Madrid Castilla in the coming months. Real Madrid C compete in the same division as Logroñés, while Castilla are one level higher.
In recent years, the breakthrough of academy players into Real Madrid’s first team has become a rare occurrence. González García and Raúl Asencio are the most recent names to have joined the senior squad. More often, the club has preferred to sell its promising talents, such as Nico Paz, while retaining the option to re-sign them at a later stage.
