Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has praised Arda Güler, describing the young Turkish star as a blend of two legendary playmakers.
The 20-year-old initially struggled to adapt to life in Spain after joining “Los Blancos,” facing limited playing time under former coach Carlo Ancelotti. However, since Alonso’s arrival, Güler has become an important player for “Los Merengues,” often starting matches and showing consistent improvement.
The former Fenerbahçe midfielder has impressed his new coach, who sees in him qualities reminiscent of both Guti and Mesut Özil.
“Because of his talent, Arda is a mix between Guti and Özil,” Alonso told the Spanish newspaper Marca, as reported by Gazeta Express. “Guti, because he had the ability to play in many attacking positions, and Özil, because I really enjoyed playing with him. We have to support Arda — we’re happy with his level of play.”
Güler delivered an outstanding performance in the recent match against Juventus, where he was named Man of the Match.
The Turkish midfielder completed 96% of his passes, with 10 of them made in dangerous attacking areas. He also contributed defensively, recovering the ball 10 times and winning five duels.
Last season, Arda started only one group-stage game and did not make any appearances in the knockout rounds — but under Alonso, his role at Real Madrid has transformed significantly.
