Sometimes I Hear You Stop Suddenly
Sometimes I hear you stop suddenly,
and you change your direction,
and start walking toward me.
I hear it as a kind of whisper.
My heart rises to greet you,
to greet you in the air,
to bring you home,
to begin again our long life together.
Then I remember
the unpassable dimensions of love,
and I prepare myself
for the consequences of memory
and longing.
But memory, with its list of years,
gracefully steps aside,
while longing falls to its knees
like a calf
in the straw of wonder.
And for the brief moment needed
to keep your death alive,
we are refreshed
in each other’s company.
