After the unforgettable triumph at the 2014 World Cup, Germany has entered a long period of disappointment.
Eliminations in the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 editions, as well as early exits at the European Championships – in the Round of 16 and in the quarterfinals.
The road to the 2026 World Cup has not started with the expected rhythm either. After a 2-0 loss to Francesco Calzona’s Slovakia, the “Panzers” managed only a hard-fought 3-1 win against Northern Ireland.
Even though the squad includes talents like Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and the promising rise of Nick Woltemade, skepticism remains high in Germany.
Speaking openly about the situation on his podcast “Einfach mal Luppen”, former world champion Toni Kroos said:
“There is no player with that aura who gives the conviction that solutions can be found. There is a lack of trust, quality, and understanding among the players.”
Ending with a harsh judgment, Kroos added:
“We are light years away from competing for a trophy. Germany is very far from the race for a World Cup.”
His statement has sparked new debates in the German media and public opinion, raising serious questions about the future of the national team.
