Xavi among the main candidates for the Bayer Leverkusen coaching job

For the second time this summer, Bayer Leverkusen is in need of a new coach, and reports suggest they are once again interested in former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández.

The Erik ten Hag era at Bayer Leverkusen has come to an end after just three official matches and a little under three months. The former Manchester United coach failed to impress Leverkusen’s board, who began searching for his replacement a week ago.

According to MARCA, the German club has contacted Xavi to gauge his interest in taking charge of the team.

However, the former Barcelona manager has rejected Leverkusen’s offer. According to the report, Xavi feels it is not yet the right time for him to return to the dugout. This is not the first time he has turned down the chance to coach Leverkusen. The Spanish ex-midfielder was considered one of the main candidates to replace Xabi Alonso after the latter’s move to Real Madrid, alongside Como’s manager Cesc Fàbregas, but his refusal led the club to focus on Ten Hag instead.

Leverkusen is undergoing a major rebuild two years after winning the Bundesliga title without losing a single match.

Just this summer, they have lost players such as Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, and Piero Hincapie.
