Maldini: I Was One of the Biggest Losers Among the Greatest Winners

Paolo Maldini is considered the greatest defender in football history.

The Italian legend has won everything possible in football, but he has also lost many finals.

Because of this, the former ironclad Milan defender considers himself one of the biggest losers among the greatest winners.

“Success also comes through defeats. In the end, I was one of the biggest losers among the greatest winners. I was fortunate to win by losing so much,” Maldini initially told Rai 3.

He also spoke about his football debut:

“When I made my debut, I thought I wouldn’t play. I didn’t even bring the right football boots. I was up against players with much more experience than me. When the coach told me to go in, I stopped thinking—I don’t remember anything. My position on the field? I told the coach I could play anywhere,” Maldini added.

Regarding his father, Cesare, Paolo said:
“I had a good relationship with him. In the early years of my career, I can’t deny that his legacy weighed on me a bit,” concluded Maldini, who won the Champions League trophy five times.
