Knowing Whom to Speak To Is Important – Understanding Whom to Be Silent With Is Even Better

written by Ruzhdi Gashi, writer and positive thinking coach

In a world filled with voices, words, thoughts, and opinions, it often seems like communication is everything. But in truth, the value of words lies not only in what is said, but also in the care for what is left unsaid. Knowing whom to speak to is an important art of life, but understanding with whom it is worth being silent is a deeper wisdom.

Words carry weight. They can build bridges, but also raise walls. That’s why speaking to someone who listens with their heart, who understands not only your words but the meaning beneath them, is a rare gift. It brings a calming feeling to find someone who doesn’t interrupt you halfway, but walks with you to the end of your thought. Yet not everyone is ready to listen, and not everyone deserves to know everything. Here lies the importance of wisdom: knowing when and with whom to speak.

But deeper than that is the ability to recognize the power of silence. Because silence is not always emptiness. Sometimes it is the most honest way to communicate. There are people with whom you can share quiet moments and feel more understood than in a thousand conversations. A glance, a presence, an absence of words — all can speak louder than a long speech.

Understanding whom to be silent with is like finding a mirror that reflects not just your appearance, but the depth of your soul. It’s feeling safe without needing to explain. It’s a quiet intimacy — yet a true one.

At the end of the day, it’s not only the importance of what is spoken that remains, but also the weight of the choice not to speak. Because not every battle must be won with arguments. Some people deserve to be heard. Some deserve silence. Some earn the most beautiful words — and some, simply, the wisest silence.
