Poem by Elisaveta Bagriana

Speak to Me, Come, Speak — What Do You Wait For?
Speak to me, come, speak — what do you wait for?
I lower my lashes and fall into hush.
Sky and sea blur before me more and more,
Altars alight beneath the mountain’s blush…

Far off, the sunset burns crimson red,
Here—fire, ruin, and silent despair.
Where will dawn receive us ahead?
What road awaits us out there?

Might we, hand in hand, become one flame,
Two fires uniting in bright embrace,
And in the night, among stars without name,
Shine on forever—two stars in space?

—I don’t know the end of the road we’re near,
But just call my name—and I’ll appear.
