American President Donald Trump took the original Club World Cup trophy for himself and placed it in the Oval Office, while world champions Chelsea were given a replica of the trophy.
Before the final match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, which took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, Trump told the media outlet “DAZN” that the trophy had been gifted to him and that it would be kept in the Oval Office.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited the White House with the trophy back in March.
“They told me: ‘Can you keep the trophy for a while?’ We placed it in the Oval Office. Then I asked them, ‘Where should we put the trophy?’ Infantino told me: ‘We’re never taking it back. You can keep it in the Oval Office forever. We’ll make another one.’ And they did make a new one. So, that was kind of exciting. It’s in the Oval Office for now,” Trump stated.
This means that, despite crushing the European champions Paris Saint-Germain’s dreams of being crowned world champions, Chelsea ended up lifting a replica of the FIFA Club World Cup trophy.
