Ecstasy and Her Companions
or her maidens
(some of them Extra Virgin)
are meant only for the very young
or the very old
who are bold enough to believe
that ecstasy must be
the life’s purpose of the free—
like when we stand enchanted
before the late sun
filtering through the trees,
and suddenly the earth is covered
with luminous shadows
born of eternity,
and the ochre ink of the last light
spills over us.
Well then—let us fly like moths into it
and burn in the radiant blaze
in that final ecstasy!
