Poem by Pablo Neruda

Now leave me in peace
Get used to my absence
The time has come to close my eyes and name five things,
the most essential things.

First, endless love.
Second, autumn—
I cannot live without the falling leaves returning to the earth.

Third, the harsh winter, the rain I have loved,
the caressing warmth of fire in the frost.

Fourth, the turning of summer like a watermelon.

Fifth, your eyes—
I cannot fall asleep without them,
I cannot exist without feeling their gaze.
I become all spring when you look at me.

Friends, this is all I want,
almost nothing, almost everything.

Now, if you wish, walk away.
I have lived so that one day you must forget me,
erase me from the book.

My heart has been infinite.

Since I long for silence, do not think I have died;
on the contrary, I am more alive than ever.
Never have I felt as I do now,
never have I received so many kisses.

Now, as always, it is early.
The light flies with its wings.
So leave me alone with the day.
I ask permission to be reborn.
