POEM BY BARBAROS İRDELMEN

POWER MAD
Soldiers died,
babies, children, and youth.
Mothers, fathers, and the old –
all gone.

All patriots, all selfless.
Yet all guilty.

They were born
in the Middle East,
where oil flows.

Did you see that?
That’s why
we wiped out
your homeland.

Your homes, your workplaces,
your schools, your hospitals –
all blown to pieces.

Now you don’t need
water,
or bread,
education,
or medicine.

And you – the watchers –
turn your backs,
close your ears and eyes,
keep hiding.

We’ll begin
punishing the defiant
tomorrow.

Oil is our inheritance.
Regimes? Democracy?
Humans? Humanity?
We recognize none of them.
