Poem by Alda Merini

I Don’t Want to Disappoint You Now

I don’t want to disappoint you now,
but that deaf whisper
of emptiness was real,
those cursed lips
that longed for a kiss.

And those hands you pulled away from my belly
just to curve them around your neck—
our love can never be untangled
within the sealed vein of the zone
that desperately seeks only the mania.
