Italy Sacks Spalletti

After the heavy defeat suffered against Norway, the Italian national team has decided to dismiss head coach Luciano Spalletti.

Spalletti announced this on Sunday through a statement given during a press conference.

On Friday, as part of the World Cup qualifiers for the tournament to be held next year in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Italy was defeated by Norway with a deep scoreline of 3-0, reports koha.net.

“Last night, the president and I were together — we are often in contact — and he informed me that I would be relieved of my duties. I would have preferred to continue my work and remain in my position, but I consider this a service to the country,” said Spalletti.

The 66-year-old Spalletti took charge of Italy in 2023. He led the team in 23 matches, achieving 11 wins, six draws, and six losses.

He had replaced Roberto Mancini as Italy’s head coach.

For Spalletti, Monday’s match against Moldova will be his last at the helm of Italy’s technical staff.

Italy will host Moldova at 20:45 in their second qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.
Italy is in Group I, along with Norway, Israel, Estonia, and Moldova.
