Carlo Ancelotti to Leave Real Madrid at the End of the Season, But a Future Return Isn’t Ruled Out

Carlo Ancelotti will step down as Real Madrid manager at the end of the La Liga season to take over as head coach of the Brazil national team. However, despite the new adventure ahead, the Italian is already considering a possible return to the Santiago Bernabéu in the future.

It hasn’t been a successful season for Real Madrid, and Ancelotti is set to finish his final campaign without winning a major trophy. Nevertheless, he continues to maintain a strong relationship with the club’s leadership—especially with president Florentino Perez. For that reason, a future return cannot be ruled out.

According to Marca, there is a possibility that Ancelotti could return to Real Madrid after the 2026 World Cup, when his contract with Brazil expires. Both sides are open to this idea, with his departure at the end of the season seen more as a “see you later” than a final farewell.

Ancelotti has vast experience in football, both as a player and as a manager, and is therefore likely to have a suitable role within the club at the highest level. He almost certainly won’t return to the bench, as the club’s leadership hopes Xabi Alonso will remain as head coach for many years.

At some point, there will be discussions about this possibility, but for now, Ancelotti is focused on the last two games of the season with Real Madrid. After that, he will turn his attention to Brazil, where he will reunite with Paul Clement—his former assistant during his first spell at Los Blancos.

Clement will replace Davide Ancelotti as Don Carlo’s assistant, as Ancelotti Jr. is looking to embark on his own managerial journey. He has recently been mentioned as a candidate for the Rangers job, among other opportunities.
